Obtaining Your Scratchpad

You can apply for a scratchpad as a member of the taxonomic community you wish to represent or as an individual intending to nucleate such a community. The application should be made by the "Maintainer". This is the person who will take ultimate responsibility for the site's content and all its users. While the scratchpads are designed to be easy to use, some basic familarity with website development is necessary for person occupying the site maintainer role because the maintainer has access to certain administrative features of the website that other contributors will not be able to reach. The NHM EDIT team will help maintainers acquire these skills, but ultimately it will be this person’s responsibility to manage the site.

Please think carefully about the workload you are undertaking and the community that will become involved. These sites are intended to be a community focal point and as such we hope that they will be dynamic. It would be very unusual for a maintainer to be able to manage more than one site, so if you want to have a taxonomic focus on some group but differentiate the site by geographical area, for instance, it would be easier all round to have a single domain and maintain the geographical areas as sections within the site. To put it simply: please do not apply for more than one domain name unless you really do have the time, energy and skills to make them all successful.

If you feel you meet these requirements, complete the two-step application process below:

  1. Complete the Scratchpad Sign-Up form on the next page. In addition to some basic information about you, we require you to submit a “Mission Statement” that defines the sites purpose, scope and intended audience in under 200 words. This text will appear on your Scratchpad so it is worth planning this section before you submit your application. We will also be asked to propose your site domain name e.g. http://example.myspecies.info or tell us a domain name that you already own. This is the web address through which people will access the site. Some tips on choosing a suitable domain name are provided by clicking this link.
  2. Read and sign "Terms and Conditions of Use" document that outlines EDIT's responsibilities to you and your responsibilities to EDIT. We require a PAPER copy of this document to be lodged with us before your application will be fully processed. Full details are contained within the Terms and Conditions of Use document.
