Scratchpad FAQ

Who are we?

Scratchpads being developed by Vince Smith, Simon Rycroft and Dave Roberts under the auspices of EDIT - the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy.

Who “owns” Scratchpad content?

The sites “authors,” i.e. those contributing to the site.

Why do all the sites look different?

Because the sites contributors make them this way. We insist that a tiny logo appears at the bottom of every page. Otherwise authors are free to do what they like.

What is the catch?

Public content must be made available to users under a Creative Commons “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike” license. See http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

What are the conditions of use?

Contributors must accept the short “Scratchpad Terms and Conditions of Use” document, at http://www.editwebrevisions.info/conditions

What software do you use?

Scratchpads are based on the content management system Drupal (http://drupal.org/), without which, none of this would be possible (thank you Drupal). This is written in the programming language PHP and uses the database package MySQL. Our implementation of Drupal uses the Linux operating system the Apache web server. Functionality is enhanced by a number of contributed modules.

Where are the sites hosted?

Scratchpads are centrally managed on servers at the Natural History Museum, London.

Is the content backed up?

All sites and their respective content are backed-up daily. This is collected and stored off-site Mon.-Fri. Content (past and present) is archived within each site so it remains citable at a distinct web address, even if it is subsequently edited.
